Chairman’s Newsletter – November 2016

Posted on November 21st, 2016

Hello everyone

We have had a good autumn, weather-wise, and it has been great to see strong numbers on all the rides. The new Committee had its first meeting since the AGM and it was all very positive – a smooth handover is happening in areas like the finances and the management of the website. Now there are a few important things for me to tell you about:

This is a well established local event in Wantage Market Place, held this year on the evening of Friday 2nd December. Fortunately, the origin of the bicycle fits nicely into this historical era – we participated for the first time last year and found it a very positive experience with some good contacts and lots of interest. Steve Swanton is heading up this initiative, and he would love to hear from you so we can have a broad cross-section of the club to be on the the stall, perhaps in 1 or 2 hour shifts, who can enthuse about cycling with the club as well as cycling generally. Any old cycling memorabilia to lend for the evening would be great too. Please get in touch with Steve on

As always, it’s amazing how time flies – we are once again finalising the details of our big charity event – the famous (or occasionally infamous) Mince Pie Ride. This is always a very popular event and we are publicising it widely around neighbouring cycling clubs. Last year we had the amazing sight of 140 or so riders taking over the National Trust car park at White Horse Hill. We’d love to do the same this year. See below for details:

This is our annual festive ride from Wantage to Uffington White Horse Hill, which is once again in aid of Whizz Kidz, the children’s mobility charity. This year the date is Sunday 11th December.

Guests and other cycling clubs are very welcome to join us at Wantage Market Place at 9.45-10am for the start of the rides or join us at White Horse Hill NT car park (grid ref SU 293866) from 11.15 to 12.00 for mince pies and mulled wine. A cash collection will be taken and all proceeds on the day will go to Whizz Kidz.

We will have road rides at 1*, 2* and 3* grades and an off-road ride – see separate ride entries on our website ( for route details. This is a very popular event, so please arrive in good time for registration. There will be a short briefing at 10 am. The 3* and off-road rides will set off soon after, the 2* ride 5 mins after that and the 1* at about 10:15.

Afterwards the rides will continue to The Fox in Denchworth for a pub lunch (at 13:00). There will also be a ride directly back to Wantage.

Please make a note in your diaries and feel free to pass this invitation on if you know other cyclists who may be interested.

The pub lunch is a particularly important part to plan – we have a confirmed block booking with a maximum of 30 so it will be ‘first come, first served’. Could you therefore make it a priority to let me know BY FRIDAY 25th NOVEMBER if you would like to join us for that? Also – the Fox has a fixed Christmas menu and they have asked us to choose menu options ahead of time. The menu was attached to my recent email Newsletter – please let me know your choices, also by FRIDAY 25th NOVEMBER.

One more point on this one – as in previous years we will be reliant on the Club members to provide donations of mince pies, mulled wine, standard red wine or cranberry & raspberry juice beforehand, so we can maximise the giving to Whizz Kidz. For those of you who are new, we brew up cauldrons of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic mulled wine, based on my wife Carin’s secret recipes, and serve it from ex-military insulated jerry cans – it is awesome! Please give this some thought in your cooking and/or shopping schedules and I will send out more details in a week or so.

The Committee is working on the transition from CTC Wantage to Cycling UK Wantage. We have the relevant web addresses secured and we will complete the transition early in the New Year. We have also been discussing new clothing designs and are in the process of negotiating with suppliers to sort this out. We particularly want to set up an online store facility so that people can easily order kit online. This may not now be quite ready before Christmas, but we feel it is better to get it right than rush it too much. More details to come.

I think that’s all for now. Happy cycling!
