Back-on-your-Bike Ride 2018 1* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Steve Swanton - 01235 764257
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our Annual Spring Ride aimed at those who haven't been cycling much over the winter and want to dust off their bike and get the pedals turning again. Newcomers will be very welcome and it's an opportunity for club members to bring family and friends. Please note that children need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.

This year's ride will follow an essentially flat route around the lanes of the Vale of White Horse visiting the pretty villages of Lyford, Charney Bassett and Stanford-in-the-Vale, a round trip of about 15.5 miles. We'll have a refreshment stop on the Church green at Stanford - please bring a snack and a drink to slake your thirst.

Abingdon Cycle Festival Add to Calendar

Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Market Square Abingdon
Description:
This is an advert for The Abingdon cycle Festival rather than an actual Cycling UK Wantage event.

The Abingdon Cycling Festival will be back for a 7th year on Sunday 22 April 2018.
The Festival will deliver free rides and cycling activities for all ages and abilities. There will be over 20 rides on offer for road bikes, mountain bikes and anything else with two wheels!

The event ambition is to encourage as many people, from every part of the local community, to get on their bikes! Road bike, mountain bike and family rides will head out from the Market Square starting from 9am.

For the first time, 2018 will also see events taking place in the afternoon on the airfield at Dalton Barracks. Less experienced riders can benefit from free cycling skills sessions from 13.00-14.00, led by qualified coaches, for both children (8-14) and adults (15+). Then the racing cyclists take over the airfield track, competing in the Abingdon leg of the Oxfordshire Road Race League, hosted by the Abingdon Race Team – sign up on the British Cycling website. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch – there’s plenty of free parking.

All rides organised by the festival are free and start at 9am in the market square and 1pm at Dalton Barracks (use Barrow Road entrance) and will continue throughout the day.

Check the Abingdon Cycle Festival Facebook page for more details. https://www.facebook.com/cycleabingdon/

Regular Wantage Ride - Burford Classic 3* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Steve Swanton - 07857 527990
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

A classic touring ride into the Cotswolds, taking in some of my favourite places: Coleshill, Eastleach, the Windrush valley, Burford and a much-frequented ford. Just over 56 miles, which we'll take at a steady pace of 12-13 mph, with a few ups and downs, primarily before lunch. In the spirit of touring, we'll have a late morning break to visit the twin churches of Eastleach, before continuing on to lunch at the Royal Oak in Burford. There's a chance to dip our wheels in the ford at Shilton and a possible café stop on the way home.

To help with numbers, please could you let Steve know if you are planning to come (thanks to those who've done so already).

10-mile Club Evening Rides Restart 1* Add to Calendar
Contact:
Steve Swanton - 01235 764257
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our weekly programme of Tuesday evening easy rides restarts this week with a out-and-back ride to the village of Goosey in the heart of the Vale with its large village green, small white-washed church and a fine view towards the Ridgeway. A relatively flat route through Denchworth of about 8 miles. It can be cold in the lanes in April so please wrap up warm.

Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

The ride will return to and finish in Grove for those who need to get home. However, all are welcome to stop at The Fox in Denchworth for a sociable drink with members on the other evening rides on the way back. Lights will be needed for your ride home from the pub.

2* Saturday Half Day Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL 2* Add to Calendar
Contact:
John Tranter - 07836 238350
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

This is a 2* ride that has pretty much everything! We head out via Charney Bassett and discover the nifty Southmoor footbridge - the safest way to cross the A420. Then we follow the quiet road parallel to the A420 all the way to Cumnor and swoop down Cumnor Hill to the edge of Oxford. From there we utilise a a super cunning bike-safe transit of the A420/A34 Botley junction to head north for a lovely circuit around Port Meadow before heading back into town via Wolvercote to my very own St Cross College for a VIP coffee stop. You can only get in if you are a friend of the Bursar, with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles. Then there is more fun with my most cunning bike track and riverside route out of town to the west, before the climb of Cumnor Hill. We head for home via Wootton, Tubney and Fyfield.

It is a long ride for an afternoon, but we have a few short cut options in the final section which we can use if necessary. I don't expect to be back before 5.30pm. Having said that, there are very few hills and we will stick to a steady 2* pace.

CUK Oxfordshire 75 miles - Chilterns 3* Add to Calendar

Robin Tucker - [javascript protected email address]
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
All day ride to the Chilterns. This ride is particularly intended for those aiming to get some distance in their legs before the Century ride in May, or other long rides in the summer. The distance allows us to reach from Grove to the beautiful scenery of the Chilterns.

Riding first to the East, our first tea stop is after 25 miles at Watlington. Then, we are refreshed for a somewhat hilly section into Henley-on-Thames, to see where the river leaves the county, and back upstream to our second stop at Wallingford at about 50 miles. From there, it is relatively flat again back to Grove.
