Tuesday Evening Off-road Ride for Novices 2*

Off-road ride around local tracks. This one will be shorter and easier at 10-15 miles (and options to shorten or extend).

Knobbly tyres and lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.

Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. Please check this entry before setting out in case I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

While the rain of the afternoon might have put off some potential off-roaders, an intrepid 6 nonetheless set off from OMH for an introduction to the tracks around Wantage. The route up Crab Hill proved to be very slippery with some slick mud but was successfully negotiated by all. The group then headed up Goddard's Brook to the Ridgeway in the gathering gloom, with lights finally required for the last climb up through Bitham Woods. Still feeling fresh the group then turned east along the Ridgeway before descending the swoopy gravel track that is Coldharbour Road towards Lockinge. Another transit of Crab Hill, this time down and in full darkness, meant muddy bikes on arrival back at OMH.
In total we did 20km and almost 200m of climbing at speeds about 2/3 of the normal for the MTB group. A good time was had by all, and a special BZ (naval-speak for "Well done" ) goes to 13 year old Ellie who surpassed herself on what was a challenging introduction to off-roading.
